Do you like to grocery shop? Looking for a fun volunteer opportunity you can do weekly or as your schedule permits? We'd love to have you as a grocery shopping/delivery driver!
Meals on Wheels Erie books an average of 20 grocery shops a week and our volunteers deliver more than just a sack of groceries. Your friendly face will brighten a lonely senior's day...and to be honest, you'll feel pretty good all day too!
This is the perfect opportunity for a single or pair of volunteers or even a corporate team!
Please call the office at 814-452-6930 or email Pat at pat@mealsonwheelserie.org for details.
What can you expect?
Grocery orders are taken on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 8am to Noon each week. Volunteer shoppers are contacted by Pat, our Grocery Program Coordinator, to determine availability and to schedule a shopping/delivery date. Shopping and delivery generally take place on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday; during daylight hours; at a time convenient for both the volunteer and grocery client.
Meals on Wheels Erie has a partnership with Giant Eagle and Sanders Markets.
Volunteers shop at these stores, usually the store closest to the client.
At the agreed upon date/time, the volunteer heads to the appropriate store and picks up the shopping list for their client. Each customer service desk keeps a Meals on Wheels credit card for payment. You shop. You pay. You deliver the groceries to the client and collect payment. We provide each volunteer with stamped envelopes to mail all paperwork and payment to the office - or you can drop by and say hello if you're in the neighborhood, we'd love to see you!
Feel like Mr. Smith is a "little off" today when you delivered?
Volunteers are encouraged to let the office staff know and we'll take it from there.
Meals on Wheels Erie's clients range from seniors, to the permanently disabled, to Veterans in need. Because Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers are sometimes the only person our homebound clients see that day, we are often the first to notice changes in living conditions, health, or behavior. We can offer peace of mind to loved ones because they know someone is checking in regularly.
Volunteer drivers must submit to a criminal background check, have proof of insurance on their vehicle, and attend an orientation/training session prior to their first shopping trip. Please call the office at 814-452-6930 or email Pat at pat@mealsonwheelserie.org for details.
